What Compounded Thyroid Medication Is

Most commercial thyroid tablets contain levothyroxine (T4), which the body converts into liothyronine (T3), the hormone that actually does the work. Commercial tablets come in a fixed ladder of strengths and lock any T3-to-T4 ratio, so when a prescriber wants a dose between those steps, a specific ratio, a slower-releasing T3, or a capsule without a certain dye or filler, compounding is the only way to get it. We prepare each capsule to your prescriber’s written order, matching the strength, ratio, and release speed they specify. This is general information, not medical advice; whether compounding fits your treatment is between you and your prescriber.

Some of Our Compounded Thyroid Products

UnityRX Pharmacy compounded thyroid T3, T4, and T3/T4 capsule bottles

Nothing on this list gets compounded until a prescriber orders it for a specific patient. The table below shows forms we commonly prepare, not a fixed menu.

Product Dosage Form Strength Notes
Liothyronine (T3) / Levothyroxine (T4) combination Oral capsule As per prescriber instructions Both hormones in one capsule, combined at the ratio your prescriber writes
Liothyronine (T3) Oral capsule, immediate release As per prescriber instructions T3 on its own, compounded to the exact amount ordered
Liothyronine (T3) Oral capsule, sustained release As per prescriber instructions Releases gradually over the day instead of all at once
Liothyronine (T3) / Levothyroxine (T4) combination Oral capsule, sustained release As per prescriber instructions Combination hormone prepared in a slower-release base
Levothyroxine (T4) Oral capsule, dye-free and filler-selected As per prescriber instructions For prescribers who want T4 without a specific dye, lactose, or gluten-containing filler

Strengths, ratios, and dosage forms are set by your prescriber. Compounded medications are prepared for a specific patient from a valid prescription.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer home delivery?

Yes. We compound your prescription here in Plano and ship or deliver it anywhere in Texas for free, with most orders going out the next business day once it’s ready.

How do I send my prescription to UnityRX Pharmacy?

There are a few ways to get your prescription to us:

  • Fax: Ask your doctor’s office to fax it to 972-214-0351.
  • E-prescribe: Your doctor’s office can send it electronically to UnityRX Pharmacy.
  • Call us: Call 972-214-0350 and give us your prescriber’s contact information; we’ll reach out to them directly.
  • Online transfer: Use our online transfer form and include your prescriber’s contact information so we can reach them.

What is compounded T3?

Liothyronine, known as T3, is the thyroid hormone your body normally converts from T4. We compound it into a capsule at the exact strength your prescriber writes, in either immediate release or a slower sustained release. Whether T3 belongs in your treatment plan is a conversation for you and your prescriber.

What is a compounded T3 and T4 combination capsule?

It’s a single capsule holding both hormones together, at whatever ratio your prescriber specifies. Commercial combination tablets lock that ratio along with the fillers used; a compounded version can carry a ratio that isn’t sold anywhere and leave out ingredients your prescription calls for.

Can compounded thyroid medication be made without dyes, lactose, or gluten?

Yes, when your prescriber asks for it. We choose the capsule shell and filler to match the prescription and can tell you which excipients were used. Mention any sensitivity to your prescriber so it gets written on the order.

Can I switch from my commercial thyroid tablet to a compounded capsule on my own?

No. Thyroid hormone works within a narrow range, and changing strength or form without your prescriber’s direction can throw that off. If a compounded option interests you, start that conversation with your prescriber.

How long does it take to prepare a compounded thyroid prescription?

Most prescriptions are compounded shortly after we receive and review them, then shipped or delivered anywhere in Texas, usually going out the next business day. A refill on a formula we’ve already made for you tends to move even faster.
