What Compounded Hair Loss Treatment Means
Hair loss treatment starts with a prescription, period. You can't just buy this off a shelf. A dermatologist, primary care provider, or telehealth prescriber looks at your scalp and hair pattern first. Sometimes they'll order bloodwork if a hormonal cause seems likely. Then comes the order: active ingredients, strengths, vehicle, all spelled out. UnityRX Pharmacy, a compounding pharmacy in Plano, TX, is who actually prepares that formula, whether it's a topical scalp solution, an oral capsule, or both, and we'll ship it anywhere in Texas.
Results really do depend on the person, no two ways about it. What you see has to do with what caused the loss to begin with, how long it's been going on, and whether you actually stick to the routine your provider set. So don't change a dose or switch formulas on your own. Check with the prescriber first.
For Men
Male pattern hair loss: thinning at the temples, thinning at the crown. DHT drives most of it. Most often what we fill is oral finasteride paired with a topical minoxidil solution. Plenty of prescriptions put both actives into one scalp solution instead, though. Some providers reach for dutasteride instead of finasteride, others add ketoconazole or azelaic acid if there's flaking or irritation on the scalp. And if a hormone balance workup happens to be part of the visit, we'll compound related formulas off that same prescription.
For Women
Hair loss in women looks different, usually. Not so much a receding hairline, more a widening part and thinning spread across the scalp. Providers check hormonal causes first, most of the time: PCOS, perimenopause, postpartum shifts, maybe a thyroid issue. Whatever turns up shapes the prescription: topical minoxidil, spironolactone, low-dose oral minoxidil, biotin. Finasteride is the one exception. Prescribers won't order it for women who are pregnant or might become pregnant.
How Finasteride and Minoxidil Work
Finasteride blocks an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into DHT, the hormone mostly responsible for shrinking follicles in pattern hair loss. Providers usually order it as an oral tablet, 1 mg is the common hair-loss dose (5 mg exists, but that's not it), though it can also go into a topical solution alongside minoxidil so a patient isn't juggling two separate products.
Minoxidil works on a different pathway. The thinking is that it extends the growth phase of the hair cycle, though researchers are still working out the exact mechanism. Store shelves only carry two fixed strengths. A prescription isn't locked into that: it can go higher, use a different base, or combine minoxidil with other actives in the same bottle. Some prescribers skip the topical route entirely and order a low-dose oral capsule instead.
Thinning Now vs. Long-Term Bald Patches
Compounded prescriptions work on follicles that are still active. Catching thinning early, whether it's ordinary pattern loss or a temporary shed after an illness or a stretch of high stress (the medical term is telogen effluvium), is when treatment has the most to work with. A first prescription is usually a single topical solution used once or twice a day, and most providers want three to six months of consistent use before judging whether it's helping.
Areas that have been smooth and hairless for years are a different story. Follicles that have been inactive that long typically don't respond to a topical or oral medication, and a provider might bring up other paths, such as a referral to a hair restoration specialist, which isn't something we perform in house. Where medication is still the right call, we're the compounding piece of whatever plan a dermatologist or hair clinic puts together.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you ship compounded hair loss medication?
Yes. Orders deliver or ship for free anywhere in Texas, usually the next business day after the medication is ready, so there's no need to come into the pharmacy.
How does a prescription reach UnityRX?
Your provider can fax it to 972-214-0351 or e-prescribe it directly. You can also call 972-214-0350 or use our online transfer form.
Will you compound finasteride for me?
If a prescriber orders it, yes, either as an oral tablet or combined with minoxidil in a topical solution, prepared at whatever strength the prescription specifies and shipped anywhere in Texas.
Can minoxidil be stronger than what's sold in stores?
With a prescription, yes. Store versions are limited to two strengths; a prescriber can specify something higher, a different base, or a blend with other actives.
Is treatment different for women than for men?
Often. Providers treating women tend to reach for minoxidil paired with spironolactone rather than finasteride, and may look at hormonal or thyroid causes before writing anything. We compound to whatever the prescription says.
What's typically prescribed for men?
Most orders we see combine oral finasteride with a topical minoxidil solution, or put both actives in one scalp solution. Some prescribers add dutasteride, ketoconazole, or tretinoin depending on the case.
Can a prescription regrow hair in areas that have been bald a long time?
Usually not. Prescription treatments work on follicles that are still active. Patches that have been bald a long time often don't respond, and a provider may suggest other options.
How long before hair thinning treatment shows results?
Most providers want three to six months of consistent use before judging effectiveness. Shedding can even increase briefly in the first few weeks. Results vary by person, so keep your follow-up appointments.
Does compounded medication actually help hair grow back?
Minoxidil and finasteride are meant to support the growth cycle in follicles that are still active. Your provider will set realistic expectations, since results differ from patient to patient.
Can you compound something for alopecia areata?
That call belongs to your dermatologist or provider. If they write a compounded prescription for it, we'll prepare it exactly to their specifications.
What exactly is a DHT blocker?
DHT is the hormone that shrinks hair follicles in pattern hair loss. Finasteride and dutasteride both lower DHT and are the two DHT blockers prescribers order from us most, either as an oral tablet or in a topical scalp solution.
Is there anything for postpartum hair loss?
That's a conversation to have with your provider first, since they can tell you whether treatment fits your situation. If they prescribe something, we'll compound it as written.
Is a compounded formula actually better than what's on drugstore shelves?
Not automatically better, just different. A compounded prescription lets a provider set a specific strength, combine actives into one product, or leave out an ingredient a patient reacts to.
